AT 19TH Now that Britain's David Lean has produced and directed "Madeleine," it might be just as well to give the case of the Glasgow girl, tried for poisoning her lover back in 1857 and released on a Scottish jury's "not proven" verdict, a rest. This tantalizing tale, which left yesterday's Trans-Lux audience as uncertain of Madeleine Smith's guilt or innocence as the actual jury of her peers nearly a hundred years ago, is extremely well done this time around, with Ann Todd as the sphinx-lilie heroine given to using arsenic as a cosmetic and, presumably, not above serving it to her blackmailing ex-lover in his cocoa. KNOWS WHAT SHE'S DOING Having prviously played Made leine on the English stage in a play called "The Rest Is Silence," Miss Todd obviously knows what she is doing and has reached her own conclusions about the case. And if Made leine's plight seems than vaguely familiar, stage and screen fans have only to recall "Dishonored Lady," starring Katharine Cornell 1930, Hedy Lamarr in its 1947 film version, with Joan Crawford's "Lefty Lynton" sandwiched between in 1932. On the present occasion.
Lean sensibly sets the drama in its proper period attempting no modernizing touches which allows Miss Todd to wear lovely costumes as she strug gles to free herself from a sordid entanglement in order to marry a man of her own station and of her severe papa's choice. MUTILATED BY CENSORS If the film moves slowly, it builds its case solidly by means of expert performances, notably Miss Todd's, and Lean's careful, intelligent direction. Lean could not, of course foresee the mayhem worked on his film by the Pennsylvania censors shears. Every time the word "arsen ic" is mentioned, as it frequently is the censorial scissors have sliced wildly and, it seems to us, arbitrarily, into the sound track, creating dis tracting gaps and jerky jumps which anyone cf ordinary intelligence can fill in easily. Ably supporting Miss Todd are Ivan Desny, her seducer and black mailer (we won't say victim) Nor man Wooland.

For in this expansive and monumental work, perhaps the most expert in scoring and construction of all the Strauss tone poems, abundant opportunity is afforded the concertmaster for the display of his technical and interpretive talents, most particularly in the third the six sections, in which the solo violin plays the part of the hero's heroine in the dulcet but demanding duet with the orchestra, ranging through various emotional and musical moods.
These tests, especially the technical requirements, were brilliantly met and mastered by the Russian-born, 27-year-old, plumpish, dark-thatched Krachmalnick, who comes here after five years with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. His tone full, firm, and finely flexible, notable for sensuous beauty and individuality of style and interpretation. He was assurance itself as he tossed off arpeggios, passages calling for double and triple stopping without blurring the inter-twining melodies, as well as the other demands and devices concocted by the composer. WARM WELCOME Thanks to Ormandy, admirable balance was maintained between soloist and orchestra. It emphasized the fact that while the violin is well integrated with the rich and fruity score, it never becomes simply incidental.
Krachmalnick was given a heart-warming welcome, which also, of course, included Ormandy and the crchestra. The imposing Strauss tone poem was placed midway on the program, which opened with Beethoven's "Coriolanus" overture, and closed with the Brahms First Symphony, both of which, needless to say, were played superbly. A concert of this kind, comprised of conservative, classic compositions, may not make for news in an external or sensational sense. But, by the same token, it can be one of the most satisfying musically, and the audience yesterday manifestly found just that way. First Time In Philadelphia SAT.

If that doesn't sound like the usual stuff of which delightful screen capital might be made you're right. It doesn't. But it is, as a trip to the Fox will prove.
Once more on a filmmaking spree in England, 20th Century has tossed together an American-Anglo cast with resoundingly fine results in a script which owes as much to its talented adapters as to Nevil Shute, whose novel inspired the whole witty, winning idea. And Director Henry Koster has seen the project through in a fashion to win the regard of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. STEWART IX FINE FORM No novice at playing gentle eccentrics, James Stewart is at the top of his talent as the Yankee scientist whose British bosses aren't quite certain whether he is "crackers" or a genius. For Stewart's Mr. Honey is busily attempting to prove his theory that after 1440 hours in the air, the tail of any Reindeer in his company's fancy new commercial line will come off without warning.
